Olympus E-M1 Mk II: showing ORF thumbnails in Windows explorer
- June 25, 2018
After upgrading to the Olympus E-M1 MK II a few months ago, I ran into a small issue: thumbnails for ORF files are not shown into Windows Explorer. And this is especially frustrating when shooting RAW only. Fortunately, there’s an easy and cheap way to fix this.
As discussed in this thread on dpreview.com, the problem is that Windows doesn’t offer an updated codec to support the latest.ORF files (older .ORF files generated by my E-M1 mark I are decoded, their thumbnails show fine).
The solution is to use an external codec pack: the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack 3.8 brings support for the latest version of Olympus RAW files. I paid 9.99 $ + tax for the single user version, and it’s money well spent. Not only it shows correctly the thumbnail, but I can also see EXIF data shown in the detail pane. There’s one oddity: in EXIF data image sizes are shown as 3200×2400, but it doesn’t bother me so much.
Furthermore, it supports RW2 files, so thumbnail of pictures taken with my old Panasonic mirrorless are shown too. Thumbnails of Photoshop files can be shown too, but I have found that folders with many, large .PSD files are loading slowly when I activate this option.
